He also serves as a specialist practice consultant at the RIBA and as construction law course leader for MBL Seminars. Before he joined Buckles as a partner, he had been ranked by Chambers UK  as an “Associate to Watch” for 5 years.

James Coppinger, Head of Construction & Engineering at Buckles Law, said: “Kai is a more than welcome appointment, significantly strengthening our Construction & Engineering team and bringing new expertise to our office in Bristol, where is also known for being the Honorary Consul of Germany for in the region, a role he has held since 2020.

“His track record in handling complex construction disputes, both in the UK courts and international arbitration, brings considerable experience and deep knowledge to our practice, which will be increasingly important as we support our growing client base both in the South West and on a national basis.

“The fact that he has been ranked by Chambers UK for four years running and leads the MBL Certificate in Construction Law demonstrates the quality and recognition he brings to the firm. His bilingual capabilities and experience with cross-border matters align perfectly with our firm’s growing international client base.”

Buckles Partner Kai von Pahlen commented: “The opportunity to join Buckles as Partner was compelling as the firm has demonstrated impressive growth in recent years and has clear ambitions to strengthen its position in both domestic and international markets.

“Buckles’ increasing focus on cross-border work across its practice areas, aligns well with my own expertise and background. I see genuine opportunities to contribute not just within the Construction & Engineering team but to the firm’s broader international capabilities.

“Bristol remains an excellent base for construction work, given the major infrastructure projects in the region and strong connections with European clients and contractors. The chance to help build Buckles’ Construction & Engineering practice in the South West, while being part of a firm with national reach and international ambitions, represents an exciting next chapter in my career.”
