“A brief phone call with Stephen Duffy in November 2021, supported the rationale for my parents to upgrade their EPA to LPA. Stephen was objective and gave a clear understanding of the difference between the EPA from 2007 and how an LPA would support my parents in their current situation.
Stephen and I discussed the immediate needs of my parents as my mother was in hospital at that time. After my mother returned home from two weeks in hospital, my father and mother decided to arrange a meeting with Stephen and complete the paperwork for an LPA. This would give them support from my brother and I not only for Financial Affairs, but also for Health and Wellbeing.
Stephen visited my parents home in early December 2021, with both my brother and I present. Stephen immediately set up a rapport with my parents and made them feel at ease. He had prior to the meeting, sent out paperwork and organised a phone call with Lucy (his assistant) to ensure that my parents had the opportunity to understand the LPA, the process of what would happen next with the Courts and the fees. This transparency enabled my parents to ask questions before signing any documents and make decisions.
Stephen was very open and clear about the meaning of the documents and also about mental capacity. In checking my parents understanding, they stated it was reassuring that their affairs would be looked after, if they were unable to do so. They commented that they felt reassured by the processes in place.
Sometimes fate takes its course and timing they say is of the essence. My mother did attend the hospital again as an inpatient for a week over Christmas and has made a good recovery since then. My father was taken ill a few weeks later. They both feel reassure that they have made “just” timely decisions and from our experience, I would urge others to be supportive of completing an LPA. As a family, we definitely know that we made the right decision because we had clear and concise support from Stephen Duffy.
