HMRC updates guidance on furloughing staff

On 4 April, HMRC updated its guidance on furloughing staff.

Key points to note from the guidance are:

  • Employees who have been dismissed for any reason since 28 February 2020 can be rehired and placed on furlough;
  • Employees with two jobs can still work for one employer while on furlough from the other; and
  • An employee who is placed on furlough is able to start a new job.

However, there are still a few tricky questions to be resolved around whether staff can take, or be required to take, annual leave during furlough. If this proves to be the case, clarification will also be required on what pay they should receive and the interaction with sick leave whilst on furlough. No doubt, more details will follow in due course.
