James Maxey

Head of Dispute Resolution, Partner

I am a Solicitor Advocate and CEDR Accredited Mediator specialising in company and partnership disputes, breach of commercial trading agreements, claims arising out of corporate warranties, professional negligence, shareholder disputes and breach of director’s duties.

I also advise insolvency practitioners on a wide range of contentious insolvency issues and represent individuals on a variety of complex legal claims. Over 25 years’ experience of dispute management has given me an ability to see through the fog and cut to the issues, which enables clients to accurately balance the risks and rewards of alternative options.

I regularly advise clients with international interests and act as a consultant to Buckles’ associated firm, CastaldiPartners, which has offices in Paris and Milan. I have expertise in the early assessment of contentious issues, conducting strategic reviews to align dispute solutions to commercial objectives, and work closely with in house legal teams and management boards to resolve problems by way of alternative dispute resolution, litigation, arbitration, expert determination, adjudication or commercial negotiation.

I accept appointments as a Mediator and also represents clients in mediation. I sit on the firm’s Operations Board and Executive Board and have responsibility for the strategic direction of the firm.

Outside work, I like to unwind by sailing anything I can find that floats.

Chambers UK 2022 describes James as a Notable Practitioner commenting on his “impressive litigation practice”.

Legal 500 also commends James as a leading individual in his field. The Legal 500 has described James as a first-class contentious lawyer. James was included in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame in 2022 as a lawyer who has received constant praise by clients for continued excellence.

  • James Maxey has invested a great deal of time in getting to know our business and team, thereby enabling him to approach each legal matter with a good deal of pragmatism. The Buckles team includes a number of specialists who are brought into any given issue as necessary, thereby ensuring availability of the correct skills and disciplines when required. Buckles has mastered this matrix approach to team utilisation, the success of which is in no small part due to the impressive team-working culture that Buckles engenders into its staff.
