Giles Betts

Head of Employment, Partner

I joined Buckles in April 2010 as Partner and Head of the Employment Department.

In my role I work with a range of clients, from family businesses to charities and large corporations. I also advise directors and senior executives on employment issues ranging from their employment contracts, post-termination covenants and exit payments.

My approach (and that of my team) has always been to work closely with you to achieve the best outcome for you or your business in the most pragmatic way. People issues are often very complicated and a narrow legal approach is not always the best commercial solution for your business. I try not to take myself too seriously and if I can give you the answer in a quick call or a two-line email (rather than a 5 page legal letter!) then that is what I will do.

I am a Leading Individual on Legal 500 (an independent ranking of lawyers) and have many years’ experience of advising on all aspects of HR and employment law, such as: managing claims in the Employment Tribunals, drafting contracts of employment, directors’ service agreements, company policies and procedures and settlement agreements, implementing redundancies and business reorganisations, TUPE, managing employment terminations, conducting disciplinary and grievance procedures and issues to consider when dealing with disabled employees or managing long-term sickness absence.

I trained and qualified as a solicitor with Mills & Reeve in their Cambridge office from 1997 until 2007. I then worked at Hewitsons from 2007 until 2010 where I was Partner and Team Leader for their Cambridge Employment Team before joining Buckles.

I am a member of the Industrial Law Society (ILS) and the Employment Lawyers Association (ELA) and a regular speaker on employment law at in-house and external seminars and conferences.

Outside of work I love the mountains (skiing in the winter and mountain biking or hiking in the summer), playing tennis and going on long walks with our pooch, Scooby the Cockapoo!

Giles is a Chambers UK 2022 ranked lawyer and a Legal 500 Leading Individual. Legal 500 Leading Individuals are “…recognised for their very strong technical ability, in-depth capability, credibility with the most prestigious clients and a reputation for dealing with complex and innovative cases.”
